Six items that determine your waste management cost
Quotes for the same waste can come back several times apart, and that usually does not mean “one is cheap, one is expensive” — most often the two quotes do not cover the same thing. Knowing what sets the price lets you compare them properly.
1. Waste code and hazard class
This is the biggest driver. Hazardous waste needs a different vehicle, different staff competence, a different document chain and a different receiving facility. The same physical material can cost several times more once contamination pushes it into the hazardous class.
In your hands: preventing contamination. Clean packaging is far cheaper to solve than soiled packaging.
2. Volume and frequency
Most of the cost is incurred the moment a vehicle sets off. A half-full truck costs almost the same as a full one, so the price per tonne falls as the shipment grows.
In your hands: if storage allows, shipping less often but fuller.
3. Degree of separation
Mixed waste costs more than segregated waste — and it costs twice over: the disposal charge rises and you lose the payment you would have received for the recoverable fraction.
In your hands: separating at source. This is the highest-return item on the list.
4. Packaging and transfer method
Bulk, drums, IBCs, big bags? Each needs a different vehicle and different handling. The packaging itself is also a cost line: are the drums yours or the supplier’s?
In your hands: moving to standard, reusable packaging.
5. Distance and access
Beyond distance to the plant, site access enters the price: a yard a truck cannot enter, a warehouse with no forklift or a narrow courtyard all lengthen the job and raise the cost.
In your hands: confirming the loading point and time window in advance.
6. Scope of documentation and reporting
Some quotes cover transport only; others include declaration preparation and reporting. Putting the two side by side and comparing headline prices is misleading.
In your hands: writing the scope clearly when you request a quote.
Five questions to ask when comparing
- Which waste code was the price based on?
- Are transport, packaging and handling included?
- Is there a minimum quantity or a minimum shipment charge?
- When is the recovery/disposal certificate delivered?
- Are declaration and reporting in scope, or priced separately?
Once these five answers are in writing, two quotes become genuinely comparable.
