Waste Analysis and Code Identification

The waste code is the first stone of the whole process. If the code is wrong, so is the transport document, the receiving facility and the declaration — and the mistake usually surfaces years later during an audit.

When analysis is needed

• When a new production line or raw material comes into use
• When the content is visually unclear (mixed sludge, filter cake, mixed liquid)
• When the hazardous/non-hazardous split is unclear because of mirror entries
• When the receiving facility or the authority asks for an analysis report

Process

Sampling. A representative sample is taken so it genuinely reflects the waste — a sample from the top of a tank does not give the same result as one from the bottom.

Analysis. Parameters are determined at an accredited laboratory: heavy metals, TOC, pH, flash point, loss on ignition, leaching tests and any special parameters required.

Assessment. Results are compared against hazard criteria, the appropriate waste code is assigned and written into the report with its justification.

Outcome. The report serves as the basis for both transport and declaration, and is kept in your file.
