An empty IBC or drum takes one of two paths depending on what it held: it is cleaned and reused, or broken down into raw material. Either beats leaving it in the yard to fill with rainwater.
What determines the route
Residue. Packaging that held a hazardous substance goes nowhere before cleaning. This is why the label and safety data sheet matter.
Physical condition. An IBC with a sound body, lid and gasket can be washed and returned to service. Cracked, deformed or punctured units are shredded.
Process
During collection, packaging is separated by content. On the washing line, high-pressure water and a suitable cleaner remove residue, and the resulting wash water is treated as a separate waste stream. Units beyond reuse are shredded and sorted by type — HDPE body, steel cage, metal lid.

Storage space is freed, the pile of empties stops being an audit question, and packaging in serviceable condition earns a payment.
