Hazardous Waste Collection and Transport

The most common mistake with hazardous waste is treating it as rubbish and putting everything in one container. A paint-soaked rag and an empty thinner tin in the same box produce a mixture that costs more to dispose of than either alone, and creates a record that is hard to explain in an audit.

How the process works

1. Identification. Waste types are walked through on site: which process produces what, in which packaging it accumulates, how often it fills. Samples are taken and analysed where needed.

2. Code and classification. Each waste stream is assigned its official six-digit code. The code determines both the transport document and the disposal route; a wrong code invalidates the whole chain.

3. Temporary storage layout. Sealed floor, covered area, separation of incompatible wastes, labelling and maximum holding time are planned together. Without this, a collection schedule is meaningless.

4. Collection and transport. Waste is removed by licensed vehicles. Transport is documented with the national waste transport form and registered in the mobile tracking system.

5. Documentation. Once the shipment is complete, the disposal or recovery certificate is sent to you. It is the basis of your annual declaration and audit file.

What is covered

Contaminated packaging (paint, adhesive, chemical tins), oily rags and wipes, paint sludge, solvent and thinner residue, used filters, cartridges, aerosol cans, laboratory chemicals, waste batteries and accumulators.

Frequency and volume

Schedules are built for anything from a few drums a month to a weekly container rotation. Sites producing small but constant volumes are better served by on-call collection; plants with a continuous stream get a fixed day.
